Conference Season Prep: What PE Leaders Are Actually Talking About

ACG and PEI events are coming up. Here's what deal-makers and operating partners are actually debating in the hallways — and what it means for how you talk about data infrastructure.

The Hallway Conversations That Matter

Conference season in private equity follows a predictable pattern. The panels discuss macro trends and deal flow. The hallway conversations reveal what people are actually worried about. If you are heading to ACG DealSource, PEI Operating Partners Forum, or any of the spring circuit events, here is what to expect — and how to position yourself.

Theme 1: Portfolio Operations Is the New Alpha

The era of financial engineering as the primary value driver is fading. Interest rates have made leverage more expensive. Multiples have compressed. The firms generating outsized returns in 2026 are doing it through operational improvement, and everyone at these conferences knows it.

What this means for you: if you are in a conversation about value creation and someone asks how your firm manages portfolio data, the answer matters. The firms that can demonstrate real-time visibility into portco performance have a fundamentally different conversation with LPs than the ones still assembling quarterly reports manually.

Theme 2: LP Due Diligence Is Getting Harder

LPs are asking better questions. They want to see the systems, not just the results. How do you track KPIs across the portfolio? How quickly can you generate a consolidated view? What happens when a portco misses its quarterly targets — how fast do you know?

These are not hypothetical questions. LPs are using them to differentiate between GPs who have invested in operational infrastructure and those who have not. If your answer involves Excel and email, you are losing the room before you finish the sentence.

Theme 3: The Talent Squeeze in Portfolio Operations

Every PE firm is competing for the same small pool of experienced operating partners, portfolio analysts, and fund controllers. Conference conversations increasingly touch on how firms are doing more with smaller teams — and the answer always comes back to technology and automation.

The firms that have invested in platforms that automate data collection, normalization, and reporting are able to scale their operations team's impact. Instead of hiring three more analysts to manually consolidate portco data, they invest in infrastructure that makes one analyst as effective as five.

Conversation Starters That Work

If you are at these events representing your firm, here are the questions that open real conversations:

  • "How are you handling data integration across your portfolio companies?" This is specific enough to signal expertise but open enough to invite a real answer.
  • "Have your LPs started asking about your operational tech stack?" If yes, you have an immediate connection. If no, you just planted a seed they will remember.
  • "What's your turnaround time from portco data to board-ready reporting?" This separates the firms that have invested in infrastructure from the ones still doing it manually.

The Leave-Behind That Gets Followed Up

Forget brochures. The most effective conference leave-behind in 2026 is a specific, relevant insight. If you can share a concrete example of how data infrastructure reduced reporting time by 80%, or how automated ingestion caught a data quality issue before it reached the board — that is what gets remembered after the conference.

The firms that are winning conference season are the ones that can show, not tell. And that starts with having the platform to back up the claims.
